AUSTIN LIONBERGER

Kansas City, KS

Austin Lionberger is a Kansas City–based artist who graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2019 with a BFA in Painting. Working across painting, sculpture, and animation, his practice is a meandering exploration of themes surrounding maturity and heroism. His work often packages solemn allegories of champions within playful compositions, encouraging viewers to unearth the myth-making impulses of adolescence.

At Atlas9, Lionberger contributes to the layered storytelling of the experience through sculpted objects such as the wall of the Grayscales’ swords and the bubble gum tunnel. These elements act as connective tissue within the environment, linking together the larger narrative structures of the world. He is most excited for visitors to encounter the infused magic that comes from countless hours of artistic collaboration. For Lionberger, the space stands as a monument to the beauty and goodness that can emerge from shared creative endeavors.
